France discovered Denis Urubko in January 2018 when it came to the rescue ofÉlisabeth Revolin distress in Nanga Parbat. Abnegation: he gave up the K2 he was trying to climb in winter; suspense: the Nanga wall is immense and the information is vague; feat: he climbed 1,200 metres of the wall in the middle of the night; luck or miracle: he found the Frenchwoman in the darkness. But this was not his first exploit: on at least six occasions he has brought climbers back from the "death zone", those high altitudes where everyone is too obsessed with their own survival to think about others.
