The ski down jacket: only for when it’s very cold
Women’s down jackets have an unmistakeable, assertive style reflected by designs from brands Norrona, Patagonia and Columbia. The weather is harsh where you are heading ? Down jackets are made of feathers which are the ideal heat retention medium and are popular with people who are sensitive to the cold. However, unlike other ski jackets, a down jacket is not very breathable. If the weather’s hot or you’re doing some extreme skiing or snowboarding, you may perspire profusely. That’s why it’s best to go for a down jacket when weather conditions are really bad or if it’s extremely cold. As with all ski jackets, a down jacket has to meet various criteria. First of all, it must keep in heat. To do this, the higher the density of down, the better protected against the cold you’ll be. Waterproofing is also a key factor to bear in mind when choosing your jacket. As such, go for models made of Gore-Tex or Entrant, two of the materials which best resist water and moisture. Lastly, a down jacket must provide good aeration to allow perspiration to escape. So, it’s best to choose a design with ventilation zips.
