Mountaineering book -
First published in the United States in 1960, this guidebook has been considered the "bible" of mountaineering for over half a century. Available worldwide and translated into a dozen languages, it continues to inform and inspire all generations of practitioners with its clarity and pedagogical approach...
Whether you want to learn how to camp in adventure terrain, hike in the forest, cross glaciers, go on expeditions, climb rock faces or climb the world's highest peaks. This new and updated edition is the result of a major collaborative effort, drawing on the knowledge of experienced mountaineers, experienced guides, organisations involved in climbing and avalanche safety education, professional climbers and outdoor equipment manufacturers. It reflects and incorporates ongoing changes in mountaineering, including the development of safer techniques and improved equipment.
Each chapter has been reviewed, revised and, where necessary, expanded. The illustrations have also been redesigned with recent photos and redrawn diagrams. Particular attention has been paid to avalanche safety, including how to better assess the dangers, how to travel safely in rough terrain and how to locate or rescue a fellow climber. The authors also continue to emphasise the responsibility that each person has to assume as a mountaineer in his or her practice by minimising his or her impact on the territories crossed and explored.
