Air Tech crampons by the Grivel brand. The all-steel AIR TECH crampon with its 12 points, is a more technical crampon than the G10.
The points are deliberately short and the points on either side in front are set more widely apart, which provides great comfort while climbing.
Walking becomes far more natural, particularly in ski boots, and it is not necessary to twist the ankle excessively to put the crampons to effect, as would be the case with other crampons that do not have such short and spaced out points. There is greater comfort and stability during walking and far less risk of twisting one's ankle.
The AIRTECH crampon is particularly versatile. It is suitable for all glacier hiking, snow racing, mixed ice and snow climbing, such as the Eiger, for example, or scaling the Grandes Jorasses.
This crampon can be mounted with any of the following bindings: Cramp-o-Matic - New Matic - New Classic - Wide - GSB
Crampons fitted with a CRAMP-O-MATIC binding require a rigid boot with a groove in front and at the back, in order to secure the stirrups on the boot. The metallic steel stirrup in front gives the boot a secure hold and greater precision; a tab folds down over the boot to allow the strap to be attached. This stainless steel tab – a Grivel invention –.is attached to the front of the crampon as a precautionary measure against losing it, should it inconveniently slip from the boot. At the back, the plastic heel piece slots into the groove of the boot. This binding is quick to attach.
Crampons equipped with a NEW CLASSIC binding are mounted with a plastic stirrup-like attachment system in the front and at the back. These bindings fit practically any kind of boot. Very easy to put on — you only need to close the bindings on the boot and to pull the strap. These crampons do not require the boot to have grooves. They have the added advantage of taking up very little space when folded in the bag. They are ideal if you are renting or borrowing crampons.
The NEW MATIC binding is a newer version of the CRAMP-O-MATIC binding Crampons equipped with a NEW MATIC binding are mounted in front with a plastic stirrup-like attachment system. The boot does not require a groove in the front. The plastic attachment system in front can wear out due to intense activity, but is replaceable. At the back, the plastic heel piece slots into the groove of the boot with which it is worn. They are designed for boots that are more rigid.
